Traveling means new foods... yes! But traveling also means new adventures....
Mahogany Bay, Roatan, off the coast of Honduras, was so much fun and so beautiful! It is just something about those Caribbean islands if you don't live there, you'll want to stay there, just telling you ahead of time!
Once we arrived to Roatan, we had no idea what we wanted to do, we knew we would take an island tour, but we wanted to actually experience the island. The island is known for snorkeling, especially when going through Carnival Cruise Lines, that is one the most popular adventures you can book. However, once we docked, there were people who were offering authentic island tours and we ended up taking the tour with them.
On this specific tour, we had THE MOST AMAZING tour guides ever! They kept us laughing, they both explained and showed us the entire island while driving giving us insight to what it would be like to live there. One of the first stops was to just a corner of the island that had sand and nice cold water that crashed against the large rocks that boarded this specific corner. We just pulled over and got out, and this area was what our tours guide called "their beach". There was water for miles, and it was quite a very refreshing spot that I could see people going to just to imagine whatever they wanted to or get away from things for a while. Our tour guides then continued the tour and proceeded to tell us about an amazing place where we could hold a monkey and sloths, so of course we were so excited.
They took us to visit AJs Monkeys and Sloths, which was such an amazing experience. We got the opportunity to do a small walk through to see animals such as cows and small types of rodents. We also were able to go in the cage with the parrots, sloths and the monkeys. It was very thrilling because the monkeys just jump around and land on whoever, the parrots are trained and the people who work there allow you to get pictures with a parrot on your head, and then you also get to hold the sloths, and they really just like to hang onto people. They also have a really nice gift shop to purchase souvenirs such as pens, stuffed animals, shirts, etc. I highly recommend going here to get the experience, even if you don't want the animals on you, you still can do the walk through and see others have that up close experience. Future heads up, make sure you have a bag, someone to hold your items, or not too many items with you, as they will have you empty your pockets and place bags outside of the monkey cages, due to the fact, the monkeys pick pockets!
We also went to the very top of the mountain where we were taken to some tents/gift shops
of hand-crafted things that we could purchase to keep as souvenirs, which was really nice. As we neared the end of the tour, we did stop on the side of the road, which was located on the shore, not too far from where the cruise ship was docked, where there was a small road-side market. You could purchase paintings from people who reside on the island, you could purchase fresh fish, drinks, etc. The best thing about this stop was that right behind all of the market stands, you could walk down to the beautiful warm sand, where we took our shoes off, to step in the beautiful, cool, relaxing and blue water of the island. It was a very refreshing area to just stop, breathe, and take in the scenery and watch the fish as they swam around our feet.
The final part of our tour, right before our guides took us back to the tourist area, was trying their delicacy. Our tour guides went out of their way to go and get us a plate of food for us to try what they consider their delicacy... and you'll never believe what I tried. The next blog holds that answer....
Overall, I highly recommend everyone visit and tour Roatan and go to AJs, if anybody were to ask, I would definitely say, Roatan is one of my top favorite islands I have ever been to!
