Cruise Food: A different kind of dinner

Nothing wrong with trying something different.... but how different?

I'm always saying trying new foods on a regular is the adventure everyone should experience, but even if not all the time, at least on trips.

On cruises, every night you will have the option to both decide on whether you want to attend the casual dinners and also decide on what you want to order off the menu during these dinners. During this particular dinner I decided, why not try something new, right?! Go big or go home.... well, that's what some people say anyway. I know, you're waiting on me to tell you what it was that I tried....

OX... but not just ox, it was ox tongue! Yes, it wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't what I was expecting. Some places ox tongue can be used interchangeably with beef tongue, so you really just have to watch the labels if you're purchasing it or read the menu at restaurants.

Ox tongue was very different compared to anything I've ever had! Due to the fact I've never had it prior to this occasion, I was prepared with a fork and knife and ready to cut it like a steak! That was, until I pushed the fork in it to hold it down, and the fork went straight through. It had a fairly mushy texture and was also covered in a gravy that was seasoned very well but due to the texture, I wasn't prepared at all. I later learned from the server, the bread that was placed on the side with the custard on top was there for me to eat after each bite of ox tongue to remove the after taste. The toasted bread was fairly hard; however, it is supposed to be like that, but I did not like that taste either, it was very bland, but it did serve its purpose of removing the after taste of the ox tongue.

Overall, I would rate ox tongue a 5/10, I loved the fact that I was able to try it and get the experience and I love the fact the gravy added extra flavor to the ox tongue. However, the texture of the ox tongue, I, personally, did not like. I would still recommend trying it because what one person may not like the next person will... plus, if you don't already eat ox tongue on a regular, imagine telling someone you tried ox tongue, the funny faces, would make it worthwhile; so, go try it!
